Exposure Response Prevention
Exposure Response Prevention (ERP) is a form of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). It is considered the gold standard form of treatment for Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.
ERP empowers clients to face their fears methodically, transforming their responses to those fears. This process builds confidence and reduces life disruptions. By actively engaging with the feared stimuli rather than avoiding, suppressing, neutralizing, or ritualizing, discomfort and fear generally diminish over time. Wondering how ERP works? Check out the outline below.
1. Identify Triggers
We will work together to identify the thoughts, specific situations, or objects that seem to trigger your obsessive thoughts and/or anxiety.
2. Create Heirarchy
We will collaborate to create a hierarchy of the various triggers or feared situations, ranking them from most to least distressing. This will help guide your exposure experiences.
3. Exposure
Gradually expose yourself to the triggers outlined on your hierarchy, starting with the least anxiety-inducing and remaining in that situation until your anxiety decreases.
4. Prevent the Response
Make effort to resist the urge to engage in compulsive behavior that would typically be used to decrease anxiety, including rituals, seeking reassurance, checking, or avoidance.
5. Repeat and Progress
When you begin to feel comfortable with exposure, we will move on to the next item on your hierarchy, working upwards to more challenging triggers.
6. OCD Maintenance
Maintaining progress after ERP treatment for OCD involves continued practice of exposure techniques and mindful awareness of triggers. Consistent application of these strategies helps prevent relapse and ensures long-term management of symptoms.
